After breaking away from Congress in 1998, TMC ascended to power, overcoming previous setbacks in 2001 and 2006, ultimately toppling the Left Front regime in 2011. This victory was propelled by widespread public dissatisfaction with the communist government.

As a prominent figure in West Bengal politics, Banerjee steered TMC to a decisive triumph in the 2021 assembly elections, solidifying her role as the chief minister for a third consecutive term.
