Bengal Cabinet Approves Employment Opportunities for Relatives of Panchayat Poll Violence Victims

On July 12, the chief minister affirmed, "We will not discriminate against the victims on the basis of political affiliations."

Kolkata, Nov 18 (The Street Press India) – On Friday, the Bengal cabinet approved the chief minister’s plan to provide jobs to the family members of those who lost their lives in the violence during the panchayat polls in July.

The job allocation for the family members of the victims has reportedly commenced, according to sources.

Sources said that it was a discussed case, indicating that the cabinet was briefed on the initiative announced by the chief minister shortly after the panchayat polls.

Mamata Banerjee previously stated that 19 people had lost their lives in the panchayat poll violence, while opposition parties argued that the toll exceeded 40.

On July 12, the chief minister declared, “A total of 19 people have died since the nomination period. They are victims of circumstances. We will give Rs 2 lakh each and a job as a special home guard…. We will not discriminate against the victims on the basis of political affiliations”.

Mamata also mentioned that among the 19 victims of violence, around 10-12 belonged to the Trinamul Congress party.
